The final countdown!

Here we are, 3 days left till our big book launch event in Vancouver, BC and as always there is tons to do!  The great news is that the Soft Covers are currently in the hands of DHL and on their way to Vancouver AND the postcards and t-shirts are already here.... the medium news is that the Hard Covers are ordered and I should be getting them by November 14th  (sadly not in time for the launch event!).

2 big thank yous...

#1 - I want to send a HUGE shout out to our amazing Graphic Designer BRIDGET BRAUN!!!   She is the superstar of all superstars who literally bent over backwards to get the cover art on our books just right for our printers...  she is also helping out on posters and stuff for the launch event - A-MAZING!  If you need a graphic designer - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

#2 - Sandie Atkinson, Michelle Arduini and Margaret Ebrecht - You guys have gone above and beyond to make this launch event possible.  Sandie (organizing / fundraising / donations), Michelle (media / guest list / bits), and Margaret (facilities / printing / bits).  Seriously ladies - I am so grateful that you stepped up!  Just a few more days!!!!

Climbing a mountain...

Sorry it has been so quiet these days but I am currently dealing with all of the small issues that come from sending a book to print....  did you know that you can't just print black?!  It needs to be four colour black!  Who knew!!!

Besides all of this - I am hoping that by Saturday this week the book will be on the open market and in a week and a half we will be hosting our Book Launch Event in Vancouver!  Thanks everyone for being so patient.

Feels like I have climbed this over the past month....   Can't wait for the launch event!

After another 10,000 emails back and forth.....  we are 5 tweaks away from a publishable manuscript!!!   I am so nervous, I am shaking! (that could also be the coffee or from bootcamp this morning)  All I know is that I need to get it into the printer by Monday night or I am toast!

Launch Event Speaker: Margaret Benson

Pretty excited about what is happening right now - besides final formatting we have engaged a dynamic and very entertaining speaker for our launch event!   I met Margaret over 10 years ago when I was her rowing coach for the World Transplant Games.  Her energy and zest for life continues to inspire everyone she meets!

About Margaret Benson
Margaret Benson received her “Gift of Life,” a double lung transplant, Dec. 1999.  Since then she has promoted organ donation and transplantation through many programs endorsed by BC Transplant (BCT) and the Canadian Transplant Association. (CTA) Through the BCT’s school committee, she draws on her skills as a teacher and has spoken to thousands of students, administrators and counselors about the significance of organ donation.

Margaret is actively involved in athletics to help promote the importance of fitness to transplant recipients and to honour her donor.  She’s participated successfully in five World Transplant Games and especially enjoyed the most recent games in Durban, South Africa, where she was honoured to be the flag bearer for Canada. Since her transplant, Margaret has discovered many new athletic passions such as; race walking, running, dragon boating, rowing, snowshoeing and her favourite,  Zumba. She became a Zumba instructor in 2012 and loves sharing her passion of dancing combined with exercising, with others. In 2012 and 2013, Margaret and the Vancouver group of BC CTA hosted the Transplant Trot.  Both events were extremely successful with over 400 people in attendance in 2013. The BC CTA hopes to have the event grow bigger every year,

Teaching is her life and her true joy. Margaret returned to her dream job of teaching a few years ago, but after careful consideration she decided last year to take a year or two off to explore other options. She still volunteers at her elementary school teaching Zumba.   Margaret suggests to everyone, that if you love what you do, then you will be happy.

Margaret remains on the CTA board as the BC representative, a position she has held since 2005. Margaret continues to encourage people from all across Canada to join forces to promote organ donation, to honour donors and donor families and to prove Organ Donation Works.

Final Bit.s...

We are at the point in the production process that is all about bits!
  • Finalizing cover design (check out the preview from our graphic designer Bridget Braun)
  • Figuring out the deal with an ISBN Bar Code for the back cover
  • Editing, editing, editing
  • Badgering contributors for their photos!
  • and then sending the finalized manuscript to the professional formatting people in Montreal so that the book actually looks like a book instead of a "home" formatting mess.
  • Also need to sort out everything from kickstarter - get everyone's information, and order t-shirts, stickers and postcards  :)
One more month of craziness until our book is out in the world!  Mark your calendars for Wednesday November 5th 2014 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm for the Vancouver launch event!!  Other events will be done in the next 6 months in various parts of the world.

Thank you again everyone for your support!  I still can't believe the kickstarter is funded!

Kickstarter is complete... reality is kicking in!

Hi Everyone,  I just thought that I would send out an update as to what is going on in the background.

This week the FINAL and LAST details are being added to the book and it is being sent away to be professionally formatted!  (I also have been working with a graphic designer to re-do the book covers - so it is going to be even better!).

After I get the book back and when the funding actually comes through (I am told 2 weeks) I will be able to start putting everything into action including all of the printing, etc...  and over the next 2 weeks I will be sending out surveys to collect mailing address information from you so I am ready to ship your rewards.

In addition we are currently organizing the Book Launch event for Vancouver at the Ferry Building in West Vancouver on Wednesday November 5th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.  This should be a great event with some fun sponsors.

Other book launches will be held in various cities around the world - I will write them up in The20Project Blog when I have more information.

Thanks again everyone for making this a reality!  This means so much to myself and The20Project contributors.

Cheers, Hilary

Why I made a donation to #the20project - Heather S

Yes, I’m a contributor and maybe you think I don’t need to make a donation to our own project, but the real question is “Why wouldn’t I?’  How can I ask all of my family and friends and all the people out in cyber space who I only know through Facebook and LinkedIn to donate if I don’t believe enough in the project enough to donate my own money?

I have been “watching” our Kickstarter campaign by logging in many times a day to see where we are with the fundraising.  I’ve been getting excited, nervous, worried, giddy and more over these past few days!  The array of emotions is overwhelming.  Have you ever wanted to do something so badly that you are almost sick over it?  Surely you have!   That’s how I felt about this…and I can only begin to imagine how Hilary feels, as this was her brainchild.  This has been a true labor of love on her part (and hopefully all the contributors as well).

To say that I’m excited that one day I will have something I’ve written in a published book is an understatement.  But, I would be lying if I didn’t say I was nervous too.  What if people don’t like what I wrote?  On my blog I don’t worry about it – I mean, it’s free content and if you like it “fine” and if you don’t “fine.”  It’s not like somewhere on Amazon people are critiquing my blog posts.  We are selling a book here, people!  There will be reviews!  I honestly don’t know what to think now.

I am beyond proud of what everyone has done.  Take a moment some time and sit down and try to write about what you’ve learned during your lifetime.  It’s not easy.  I feel like there is even so much more I could have said, but the words were not coming to me.  Maybe if I just wrote a bulleted list I could come up with some more things, but to flawlessly write it in paragraph form – it just wasn’t coming.  I do hope I’ve written enough to give some younger people a feeling for what they can accomplish in their life and how to overcome obstacles to get there.

I am honored to be a part of this, and I am humbled to know that some of the young people from Makomborero who this book will be supporting took money, that they couldn’t afford to spend, and donated to this campaign because they believe in what we are doing.  Being able to give back to them for their selfless act is an amazing feeling.

Please help us to continue raising funds…we have just under 5 days left.  Anything additional will be put to good use and will continue to help us give back to Makomborero!
